After 3 years our mission as independent music guide for upcoming bands is accomplished, with a lot of love, sacrifice and hard work. If we look back we can say that a great part of the bands we loved from the very first beginning made it to a next level. We discovered. We kick-started careers. We gained ground in a rusty industry. We made friends. And we had tons of fun.

2016 is the year we’re going to make bigger steps. Houbie started his own promotion label under the name NO MILK TODAY and continues his journey with upcoming bands on a higher level. Andreas keeps making videos as independent filmmaker, but in a broader world. And of course it’s not unthinkable that we will collaborate for new projects in the future..

Amsterdam’s nerd-heroes B.A.M. (Band of Awesome Misfits) has joined the party by covering the legendary theme-song. Along with the song comes a homemade, one-take, black light video. Impressively cool. Check it out!

#1 ALUMNA

“By doing everything myself, it all has to go through the same process and through the same hands.” Beside writing her own songs, Diede Oosterveen plays all the instruments herself and also creates her own artwork and videoclips. After a lot of writing in her attic room, last summer she decided to rent a farm and build a temporary studio in it to record her debut album. If you want to support her album, click here. She recorded ten masterpieces of the most delicate dreampop that will be released in 2014. We can’t wait.

#2 Bartek

This noiserockband arose after a wasted jam session in the former DDR and is named after the Polish soundguy of that evening. After David Stapel and Wessel van der Kroef headed back to Amsterdam they recorded their first Bartek songs on casette. These limited edition casettes rippled like wildfire through the Amsterdam underground. The ‘grundligkeit’ of Bartek erupts in doom-drenched popsongs covered with heavy guitar sounds. This year Stillman takes care of them as they head to the top. First fruit of our labor: their upcoming gig at NO MILK TODAY, february 18th, at Bitterzoet.

#3 CUT_

CUT_ started last summer when guitarist and producer Sebastiaan Dutilh was asked to DJ at Magneet-Festival. As he did not really care for DJing at the time, he turned it into an electronic improvisation act with vocalist Belle Doron. CUT_ is an electronic live act based on live composition and looped vocals. They allready received great response and had numerous gigs last fall, including Shoeless in Toren and two weeks in a row at the Van Gogh-museum. Their music is inspired by the moment, so every show is unique. In 2014 they will release their first studio song together with a video.

#4 Hering

After writing and composing more than a hundred of songs on his guitar and piano this singer-songwriter is ready to present his work to the public. With a throat like Eddie Vedder he strums and sings like his life depends on it, and it actually is! Each live show he serves the audience a great mix of americana songs and delicate blues ballads. On his last show on NO MILK TODAY he played with his great backing band consisting of Merlijn Nash, Maarten Moerland and the guys from Navarone. No guts, no glory!

#5 IX

Who is IX? IX is the alterego of Marnix Dorrestein. Last year he won ‘De Grote Prijs Van Nederland’ with his former band Über-ich. This multi-instrumentalist and producer is now with his new solo project in the business of eclectic pop. The sound of IX combines a feeling of underground New York with happy Brazil and rainy Britain. IX allready released a couple of music videos at the end of 2013, and rumour has it that this will be followed by his debut EP in 2014.

Last weekend we went on a field trip to the rock ‘n’ roll paradise of lost boys and girls – Speedfest. It was a great Saturday in a rainy Eindhoven with a lot of rockabilly, stoner and rock ‘n’ roll trash. And… a lot of pinned up girls to keep us warm!

We headed up to the amazing Klokgebouw for filming a very rare show of Kyuss frontman John Garcia heading up with the upcoming groove machine Komatsu. Right after the show we interviewed Komatsu and asked them how it feels to made a dream coming true. The amazing story of this upcoming stonerformation from Eindhoven will be released soon on Stillman.

But there is more. Later on the day we also recorded an amazing rock ‘n’ roll metal band from Antwerpen, called Bliksem. Because of their brutally strong live performance we interviewed them about being on the verge of breaking through to a bigger audience.

 
Satisfied with the catch of these brand new upcoming bands we decided to join the wreckin’ pit and came up with the idea of taking pictures of the beautifull rockabilly girls of Speedfest. Here you are!

Het programma van het Amsterdamse Bitterzoet vertoont al jarenlang veel verrassende nieuwe bands uit het buitenland die binnen afzienbare tijd de weg naar een groter podium vinden. Regelmatig zijn er ook clubavonden waarbij diverse Dj’s tot in de vroege uurtjes de zaak draaiende houden. Dikwijls wordt er aan zo’n avond een thema verbonden of wordt er aandacht besteed aan één bepaalde stijl. No Milk Today is de naam van een interessante avond die je zou kunnen omschrijven als een combinatie van beide. LiveXS wilde meer weten van dit alleraardigste ‘minifestival’ en vroeg het initiatiefnemer Houbie.

“No Milk Today bestaat als concept eigenlijk al langer maar het is pas de tweede keer dat de avond in Bitterzoet wordt gehouden. Het is een uit de hand gelopen verjaardagsfeestje. Ik was op zoek naar een zaaltje waarvoor geen huur betaald hoefde te worden”, aldus Houbie die eigenlijk Hermann heet. “De eerste keer was een illegaal feestje in een kelder op de NDSM Werf in 2010 maar die werd gesloten en toen moesten we op zoek naar een nieuwe locatie. Ik had toen bedacht dat het handig zou zijn om het als een concept te brengen. Dat bleek te werken. We zijn toen naar een klein café op het Rembrandtplein verhuisd, maar pas sinds april heeft het een meer officieel karakter gekregen. Dat was de eerste editie zoals we die nu kennen. John Coffey en de del-Toros speelden er, maar ook Bat Country, Hering en Dead Cat Stimpy”.

Voor de ouderen zal de naam herinneringen oproepen aan een enorme hit die de Britse Herman’s Hermits hadden in de jaren zestig. “Ik wilde met de naam refereren aan de bandjescultuur uit de jaren zestig. Een cultuur die mij heel erg aanspreekt en waarvan nu niet meer zoveel over is. Voor iedere band was wel een podium te vinden. Tegenwoordig is het heel erg moeilijk om aan de bak te komen terwijl er toch zoveel interessante bands in Nederland zijn. Ik weet er zo nog wel 200 te noemen die ik graag op No Milk Today zou hebben”. De ultieme act weet Houbie eigenlijk niet te noemen maar hij verklaart enorm blij te zijn met Navarone die woensdagavond te zien zal zijn. “Gevestigde namen doen me niet zo heel veel. Ik vind het veel leuker om een band te zien die op de rand van doorbreken staat. Het optreden van John Coffey beschouw ik ook echt als een voorlopig hoogtepunt”.

Ondanks het beperkte budget waarmee Houbie, die nog als student staat ingeschreven, het programma nu rond moet zien te krijgen, blijven zijn doelstellingen bescheiden. “Sponsors zijn tegenwoordig heel erg terughoudend. Je moet zelf creatief zijn en zorgen dat je zelf de juiste contacten legt. Ik doe voornamelijk de dingen die ik zelf erg leuk vind en programmeer uitsluitend bands die een dosis rock ’n roll bevatten. Misschien is dat wel het daadwerkelijke concept. Voor een dance-avond moet je niet bij mij zijn”.

Bang voor kapers op de kust indien het festival op termijn een groot succes mocht worden is Houbie niet. “Zo ver kijk ik nog niet vooruit. Ik vind het geslaagd als ik de complimenten van een band krijg. Misschien is dat de beste mond-op-mond reclame die je kunt hebben. Misschien ooit een eigen podium op een festival als Zwarte Cross. Dat lijkt me pas echt fantastisch. Maar als eerste zou ik het te gek vinden als Bitterzoet woensdagavond goed volloopt”.

Naast Navarone zullen daar ook Jett Rebel, een multi-instrumentalist die catchy soul met een scherp randje rock ’n roll vermengt, singer-songwriter Hering en het Amsterdamse My Baby, die al eens het podium deelden met Larry Graham, te zien zijn. Bovendien zullen zanger/gitarist Pablo van DeWolff en diens vriendin Nikki Beulen je in hun Magical Manifest of Genuine Grooviness meenemen naar een aantal opwindende uithoeken van het muzikale universum: de jaren ‘60/’70 en dan vooral die van de psychedelische rock. Wij laten ons woensdagavond gewillig meeslepen in het alleraardigste concept van Houbie op zjin tweede editie van No Milk Today.

You can see musicians everywhere in Amsterdam. Whether they are singing on their bikes, drinking beers at your favorite bar or hitting on your girlfriend, they are inevitably around. The question is where it is all happening; where can you actually see these artists perform their art?

The two underground music entities Stillman and NO MIILK TODAY – who dedicated the last couple of years diving into this very subject – have joined forces to bring this scene to the fore-front. No Milk Today is now part of Stillman and in that way we can combine the best of the online and offline music world.

Stillman is a project about cool musicians and bands just on the verge of breaking through to a bigger audience. This is presented in video-interviews, live recordings and music videos. Our productions are coming together in our episode-based rockumentary Dreams of music. The episodes will be released on the website Stillman.nl. Besides watching videos and discovering new music, you can also find an extensive live agenda to see exactly where it’s all happening.

No Milk Today is an authentic, underground live festival in Amsterdam with it’s main base in Bitterzoet. Each time we mix three great local bands with one headliner to have it result in an orgy of underground rock ‘n’ roll bands you just have to witness!
 
Together we help underground bands and upcoming bands in giving them exposure. We not only let them play on a noteworthy stage in front of an enthousiastic crowd but also provide them with professional video recordings. We have an expert overview of the upcoming music scene and reach a wide crowd of music lovers who simply want to have a good time.
